The Love Story

I wasn't looking for love on my year's holiday backpacking in Australia.  In fact, I wasn't overly impressed with Australian men in general by the fifth month of my trip.  So when I spotted a ridiculously handsome lifeguard on duty during a visit to Green Island with my older sister, I didn't even bother trying to chat him up.

Lucky for me, the cute lifeguard approached me, and ended up asking me on a date.  Something about his eyes and smile made me say yes, and I am VERY glad that I did.  That date was unlike any I had ever been on.  We couldn't stop talking!  Within a very (and I mean ridiculously VERY) short time, we were head over heels in love! It felt like I was living every single romantic cliche at once, but that was totally fine by me. In fact, it felt awesome! This is us two weeks later, by which time I had moved my entire set of posessions (a backpack) into his house and was living with him.  I remember calling home from a payphone, and telling mom I had met the man I wanted to spend the rest of my life with.

Unexpectedly, I had to return to Canada 4 months early, and I had to leave my Australian lifeguard behind.  But true love and the connection we had can overcome anything!  Taz decided to move to Canada to be with me.  We spent 5 1/2 months apart, me in Canada, him in Australia, before we were reunited on my side of the world.  That time apart was really hard, and many people doubted us, especially since we had spent such a short amount of time together in Cairns (less than a month).  In fact, people at my job didn't even believe that my Australian boyfriend was real!  The days passed slowly, but we eventually got through the time apart.

We lived in a studio apartment at the end of this alley the first winter, with a dog, a cat, two ferrets, no money and a lot of love.  Taz saw his first snow.  That was a tough winter, so by the end, he saw a LOT of it.

Turns out, we were just as compatible in Canada as we were in Australia.  We had some ups and downs, as all couples do, but we are devoted to each other, and to our lives together.  Through all the challenges the first winter threw at us, (and there were many) we grew closer and stronger.

In May 2011, Taz proposed.  We set a future wedding date of June, 2013.  We sort of started planning our big day, but since it was two years away, didn't give it much serious thought that summer.  We had other things on our mind: a trip to New York, my return to school in the fall, making as much money as possible, etc. etc.

Then, in October, we learned that I was pregnant. And that changed ALL our plans!  The wedding got bumped up by a full year, we moved to Belmore to be with mom and dad instead of to Ottawa like we were going to, and I left school with just a basic degree, instead of doing my honours year. Well, they do say that if you want to make god laugh, just tell him all your plans.....

Sometimes it blows me away how FAR our lives have come together in such a short time. Taz has restored my faith in the power of love, and has taught me how to trust.  He's my best friend and the love of my life all rolled up into one solid soul. I know this is just the beginning of our journey, and I am excited to see where life will take us together.
